Salute to PSSLAI Member, PO2 Eduardo Santiago for his Heroic Act
PO2 Eduardo Santiago (PO2 Santiago) of Laguna police successfully gunned down a hostage taker and saved two (2) children who were taken as hostages on board of a hijacked Five Star Bus from Pasay, Manila along NLEX on Monday afternoon, 30 May 2011. The bus with plate number AWA-773 was allegedly headed for Alaminos, Pangasinan.
According to reports, upon reaching Barangay Akle in Mexico, Pampanga, the suspect identified as Isidro Brini (Brini) of Cutud, Angeles City drew a bolo and asked the bus driver to pull over. Brini allowed the passengers to alight in the bus but kept one-year-old Carla Sarmiento of Pampanga and five-year-old Mig Axle Bunustro of Pangasinan as hostages.
Incidentally, another Five Star bus stopped to check if the first bus has engine problem upon seeing passengers and the bus driver coming out. Upon knowing of the ongoing hostage crisis, PO2 Santiago, who is one of the passengers of the second bus and happens to be clad in plain clothes, volunteered to drive the bus pretending to be an ordinary civilian. Before boarding the bus though, PO2 Santiago informed the NLEX highway patrol that he is a policeman.
Police forces in the northern area were alerted. Upon reaching the Mabalacat area, a team of policemen, on board a mobile patrol, spotted and chased the bus.
Brini was apparently disturbed by the chasing patrol car and was to harm his hostages. Sensing danger, PO2 Santiago stopped the bus and struggled with the suspect for the bolo. The cop managed to pull out his pistol which he deliberately hid from the suspect and fired at Brini as their bus hit a dump truck along the road.
Brini had three (3) other companions which according to reports were not involved in the incident.
As commendation for his bravery and heroic act, on June 13, 2011, PSSLAI awarded PO2 Ed Santiago Php 10,000.00 cash, a FortuneCare health card and a PC Tablet. He was also given a Certificate of Recognition signed by the Association’s Vice-Chairman PDIR Lucas M. Managuelod (Ret) and PDIR Ernesto V. Belen (Ret), President.
To PO2 Eduardo Santiago, a policeman in the truest sense of the word! You are one true protector of the people.
Cheers!
PNP Engineering Service "The first PNP office with 100% PSSLAI members"
It was last October 6, 2010, during the celebration of PNP Engineering Service’s 16th Anniversary when the BIG CHALLENGE was thrown away by PSSLAI President and CEO retired PDIR Ernesto V Belen to the Regional Director, PCSUPT Cristino C. Campanilla. The challenge was to turn over 100% PSSLAI members out of the more than 240 personnel of the PNP Engineering Service before the end of the year and PSSLAI will support the computerization of all the regional offices of the Engineering Service. The said challenge was very much accepted by the director.
This challenge was announced by the PSSLAI President during the turn-over of 1 Acer laptop, 1 Nikon photocopier and 4 units’ desktop computers with printers that were requested by the PNP Engineering Service.
True to his words, PSSUPT Campanilla through PSINSP Oliver G. Ocampo submitted their final Recapitulation List last December 16, 2010 which was verified by PSSLAI. And so, last February 18, 2011 - seventeen (17) sets of desktop computers with printers were turned over to the 17 Regional Offices of the PNP Engineering Service. Sa Engineering Service – lahat ay miyembro ng PSSLAI!!!
PSSLAI Gives Assistance to Victims of Typhoon Ondoy
Photo shows PDIR Ernesto V Belen, President and CEO while turning over the relief goods to PNP-PCRG representative PSI Dinah Colminero. Witnessing the turn over is the Association's General Manager and Corporate Affairs Officer
PSSLAI joins the whole nation in its massive effort to assist victims of Typhoon Ondoy by providing relief assistance to communities affected by the worst typhoons that struck the country this year.
As part of its corporate social responsibility, PSSLAI donated 500 bags of relief goods, each bag containing ready to eat food, mineral water, disinfectant and toiletries. It can be observed that our Association opted to use a reusable backpack that is waterproof and can be useful for the families affected especially their children. When everything returns to normal, these bags can be used as school bags by the children.
Through the partnership with the Philippine National Police, specifically the Police Community Relations Group, said items were distributed to areas affected by the flood. PSI Dinah Colminero received the relief goods on behalf of PCRG Director, PCSUPT Nicanor A. Bartolome.
Ondoy's onslaught brought a month's worth of rainfall over Metro Manila, causing the worst flooding in 40 years. Ondoy has marked a place in history as one of the country's most damaging typhoons.
THE PRESIDENT'S REPORT (On the occasion of PSSLAI’s 9th Anniversary Celebration)
GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE 9TH YEAR ANNIVERSARYCELEBRATION OF THE
PUBLIC SAFETY SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION, INC.
I HOPE EVERYONE IS ENJOYING THE NIGHT AS WE MARK THIS SPECIAL OCCASION WITH THE THEME “PSSLAI – ON CLOUD 9”.
MOST OF YOU MIGHT HAVE BEEN AMAZED THAT UPON ENTERING THE HALL, IT FEELS LIKE WE ARE ALL IN NIRVANA, THE FEELING OF BEING IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN,ON CLOUD 9.
WE ARE ALL DEFINITELY ECSTATIC AS YOUR ASSOCIATION HAS GROWN FROM A SIMPLE COMPANY TO A NOTABLE INSTITUTION, FROM A MINOR PLAYER IN THE SAVINGS AND LOAN INDUSTRY TO THE 3RD LARGEST SLAI IN THE PHILIPPINES TODAY.
AS WE MARK ANOTHER MILE STONE THIS YEAR, WE REMEMBER WHEN PSSLAI OPENED ITS DOORS ON JULY 1 OF YEAR 2003, STARTING OPERATIONS WITH A MERE 27 EMPLOYEES, MAJORITY OF WHOM DID NOT HAVE WORKING EXPERIENCE BUT WERE GIFTED WITH THE STRONG WILL TO OPEN PSSLAI’S DOORS TO SERVICE THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE PHILIPPINE NATIONAL POLICE.
WITH A START UP CAPITAL OF ONLY 54M, IT WAS ABLE TO REVOLVE THE SAID FUNDS AND FULFILL ITS PROMISE OF DECLARING THE 18% PER ANNUM DIVIDEND IN DECEMBER 2004. IT WAS ALSO ABLE TO ASSIST 10.260 OF ITS MEMBERS IN THE FIRST 18 MONTHS OF ITS OPERATION.
WE CANNOT HELP BUT REMEMBER THOSE DAYS AND COMPARE IT TO THE PSSLAI OF TODAY, PSSLAI HAS GROWN TO BE A 10.7B COMPANY IN THE SPAN OF JUST 9 YEARS SERVICING 108,614 MEMBERS. YOUR ASSOCIATION HAS BEEN TAGGED AS THE FASTEST GROWING SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION BUTWE ARE PROUDER TO BE CALLED THE BEST MANAGED SLAI TODAY. THE DREAM HAS BECOME A REALITY… LUMALAKI NA ANG PAMILYA PSSLAI. PINAGKAKATIWALAAN NA NG MARAMI.
FOR THE YEAR THAT PASSED,PSSLAIEXPERIENCED A SIGNIFICANT GROWTH IN TERMS OF MEMBERSHIP FROM 100,596 TO 108,614 BY JUNE 2012. AS MEMBERSHIP EXPANDED, THE TOTAL ASSETS OF YOUR ASSOCIATION ALSO GREW. FROM YEAREND 2011, ASSETS GREW BY 13% OR BY 1.2BILLION. GROWTH IN TOTAL ASSETS CAN BE ATTRIBUTED MAINLY TO THE INCREASE IN LOANS AND DISCOUNT AMOUNTING TO 834MILLION AND INVESTMENTS OF 47.9M. SOURCES FOR ITS OPERATIONAL ACTIVITY CAME FROM INVESTMENTS MADE BY THE MEMBERS IN THE FORM OF CAPITAL CONTRIBUTION.
OUR INCOME FROM JANUARY TO JUNE 2012, SHOWS THAT THE UNDIVIDED PROFITS INCREASED BY 15% FROM THE SAME PERIOD OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR. TOTAL INCOME JUMPED BY 21% FROM 703.4M TO 851.4M. AS A RESULT, PSSLAI WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN THE DECLARED DIVIDENDS AT 18% PER ANNUM OR IN REAL AMOUNT 621.5 MILLION. AN INCREASE OF 56.2MILLION FROM THE PREVIOUS SEMI-ANNUAL DIVIDEND DECLARED. SAID NUMBERS SIGNIFY THAT PSSLAI IMPROVED SIGNIFICANTLYYEAR BY YEAR.
YOUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND SENIOR MANAGEMENT CONTINUE TO STRICTLY ADHERE TO GOOD CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AND BEST PRACTICES. IT CONTINUES TO APPROVE AND IMPLEMENT POLICIES, OVERSEE THE OPERATIONSOF PSSLAI THAT WOULD ULTIMATELY BE FOR THE COMMON GOOD OF THE GENERAL MEMBERSHIP.
OPERATIONALLY, YOUR ASSO- CIATION UPGRADED ITS LOAN MONITORING SYSTEM WHEREIN, A MEMBER CAN HAVE THEIR LOAN REQUESTS APPROVED WITHIN A MAXIMUM OF 1 HOUR FROM SUBMISSION OF COMPLETE DOCUMENTS. THIS IS SIDE BY SIDE IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW PRODUCTS THAT WOULD SUIT THE NEED OF THE MEMBERS SUCH AS THE CASA (A DEPOSIT PRODUCT) AND THE PCA (A LOAN PRODUCT).
THE RELEASE OF ITS LOAN PROCEEDS TO ITS MEMBERS IS NOW IN FAST TRACK MODE. MEMBERS PARTICULARLYTHOSE IN THE PROVINCES MAY NOW RECEIVE THEIR MUCH NEEDED FINANCIAL REQUIREMENT WITHIN A MAXIMUM OF 2 HOURS FROM APPROVAL OF THE LOAN. THIS IS THROUGH THE UPGRADE OF THE NEW SYSTEM ALONGSIDE THE PARTNERSHIP THAT WE HAVE WITH OUR SERVICING BANKS, MORE SPECIFICALLY PNB AND RCBC.
PSSLAI IS ALSO THE FIRST SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION TO INTRODUCE THE KIOSK WHEREIN THE MEMBER SWIPES HIS MEMBERSHIP CARD AND IS ABLE TO PRINT THE INFORMATION REGARDING HIS ACCOUNTS. BY 2013, WE ARE PROMISING OUR MEMBERS THAT THE FUNCTIONALITIES OF THE KIOSK WILL BE EXPANDED FURTHER.
OUR NEW SYSTEM IS ALMOST PAPERLESS IN NATURE, SEAMLESS AND MEMBER-FOCUSED. AS A RESULT,THE PSSLAI, WITH 100 EMPLOYEES WAS ABLE TO RELEASE THE HIGHEST MONTHLY LOAN RELEASE LAST JUNE AT 948MILLION. AS OF PRESENT DATE, THE TOTAL LOAN RELEASE IS AT 3.65BILLION OR 8% HIGHER COMPARED TO THE SAME PERIOD LAST YEAR.
PSSLAI MARKS THIS YEAR WITH A BANG AS IT HAS STARTED THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE 12-STOREY PSSLAI CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS ALONG EDSA. IF OPERATIONALLY, WE ARE KIND TO NATURE BY BECOMING CLOSE TO PAPERLESS, OUR BUILDING IS THE SAME. IT WILL BE THE FIRST GREEN BUILDING ALONG EDSA.
WE WOULD LIKE TO TELL ALL THE MEMBERS OF PSSLAI THAT PSSLAI IS YOURS AND ALL THESE IMPROVEMENTS ARE YOURS, BECAUSE WE ARE IN THE SERVICE OF THOSE WHO SERVE AND PROTECT.
THE FOCUS OF PSSLAI IS NOT JUST IMPROVING ITS OPERATIONS BUT TO BE A CATALYST OF CHANGE TO THE MEMBERS IT SERVICES. THE BALIK TANAW PROGRAM HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE VEHICLE TO ATTAIN THIS TRANSFORMATION. FOR THIS HALF YEAR ALONE, THE ASSOCIATION HAS GRANTED DONATIONS TO VARIOUS UNITS OF THE PHILIPPINE NATIONAL POLICE IN THE AMOUNT OF 40.33M , REACHING 852 OFFICES. THE ASSOCIATION WAS ALSO ABLE TO SEND 4 OF THE PNP’S DESERVING PERSONNEL TO A FULL SCHOLARSHIP AT THE ATENEO DE MANILA UNIVERSITY. KUNG ANG MGA NAKA GIYERA DE TANGKE, AY MAY AFPSLAI, AT ANG MGA PILOTONG WALANG EROPLANO AY MAY AMWSLAI, SA MGA GWAPO AT MABABANGONG TAGAPANGALAGA NG MAMAMAYAN, MAY PSSLAI.
KAYA SA GABING ITO, TULOY TULOY NAMING IPAGMAMALAKI ANG RELASYON NA AMING NAITATAG SA AMING MGA KAPULISAN. ANG PSSLAI AY MATATAWAG NA TUNAY NA KAAKIBAT NG KAPULISAN AT NG PNP.
I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SAY THANK YOU TO ALL- OUR BOARD, OUR MANAGEMENT AND STAFF, OUR PARTNERS AND SPECIALLY OUR MEMBERS FOR THE CONTINUOUS SUPPORT GIVEN TO THE PSSLAI. LET US ENJOY THE NIGHT AS WE CONTINUE TO BE ON CLOUD 9. HERE IS TO PSSLAI ON ITS 9TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY.
THANK YOU AND GOOD EVENING TO EVERYONE. MABUHAY ANG PSSLAI!
